CONWAY — The Sugar Bears return from their weeklong break on Saturday when they face Philander Smith at 2 p.m. in the Farris Center in their final tuneup before beginning Southland Conference play next week.
After suffering a 53-44 defeat at Southern Mississippi last weekend, the Sugar Bears (6-4) will look to bounce back against the NAIA Division I Panthers (9-5), who have won four of their last five. The Panthers have played two NCAA Division I teams this season, losing 72-57 to Mississippi Valley State and 67-48 to UAPB.
It will be the 15th meeting between the Sugar Bears and Panthers, with UCA having won all 14 previous meetings. Last season the Sugar Bears defeated Philander Smith 94-25. Megan Herbert had 27 points and 12 rebounds in 22 minutes in that game, and Chantel Moss had a career-high 16 points and added nine rebounds in 21 minutes.
The Panthers are second in the nation among NAIA schools in steals per game (19.1), led by national leader Myisha Johnson who has 59, an average of 4.2 per game, and Caryan Jones who ranks fifth with 53 (3.8 per game). The Panthers are ninth in the nation in turnover margin (+7.0) and 19th in scoring margin (+15.9). Jerricka Scott, a 5-foot-9 sophomore forward, leads the team with 13.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
