CONWAY, Ark. _The University of Central Arkansas Bears and the Arkansas State Red Wolves met for the first time in nearly 60 years last December in Jonesboro.

The second meeting in that renewed rivalry comes a little quicker, specifically Wednesday night at the Farris Center. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

ASU (2-1) won last year’s game 71-64, with forward Brandon Peterson scoring a game-high 19 points. UCA fell behind by 11 at halftime after shooting 33 percent from the field (0 for 5 from three-point range), but rallied to make it close. The Bears outscored the Red Wolves 41-37 in the second half, going 4 for 8 from beyond the arc.

ASU shot 35 free throws to UCA’s 13, outscoring the Bears 21-8 at the line.

The Bears (1-1) are coming off a 108-65 victory over Division III Hendrix College last Tuesday at the Farris Center. In that game, seven UCA players scored in double figures, led by junior All-Southland Conference guard LaQuentin Miles with 17. The Bears shot 55.1 percent overall and 54.5 percent (12 of 22) from three-point range.

UCA’s defense forced 23 turnovers and scored 43 points off turnovers.

The Red Wolves, coached by former LSU Coach John Brady, have victories over Arkansas-Monticello and Tennessee-Martin in triple overtime. Their loss was by 13 points at Dayton in their season opener. Senior guard Trey Finn was a preseason first-team All-Sun Belt selection, while Peterson was second team and senior guard Marcus Hooten was on the third team.

ASU was picked second in the West Division of the SBC in the preseason coaches’ poll.

The Bears, who are also at home Saturday night against Sacramento State, are getting 61.5 points from starters Miles, Jarvis Garner, Jordan Harks, Robert Crawford and DeShone McClure. UCA is shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the three-point line. Last year’s nemesis, free-throw shooting, is still around as the Bears are currently at 48.6 percent from the line.
