SAN MARCOS, Texas - The University of Central Arkansas softball team lost both games of a Southland Conference double-header to Texas State at Bobcat Field on Saturday. The Bobcats (20-18, 13-7) won the first game 11-0 in five innings, then topped the Bears (17-22, 7-10) 4-2.
In the opener, TXST pounded out 13 hits, while limiting UCA to just two. Bobcat hurler Anne Marie Taylor (9-4) struck out two and walked one for the shutout victory.
UCA sophomore starter Kelsie Armstrong (11-14) struck out the first two Texas State batters before allowing five hits, five runs, two walks and hitting a batter in the bottom of the first.
The Bobcats piled on four more runs on six hits in the second inning off the Bears' bullpen. An error and a RBI-single by Lindsay Matt led to two more runs in the fourth.
Second baseman Anna Hernandez went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored for TXST. Jenna Emery drove in three runs and Jordan Masek and Matt had two hits and two RBI each.
UCA junior Katie McGregor and freshman second baseman Taylor Dear had the only hits for the Bears.
In game two, the Bobcats scored two runs after an error led to Matt, who led off with a walk, and Haley Lemons, who singled, crossing the plate.
UCA sophomore shortstop Melissa Bryant led the second off with a walk and scored later on a Preslie Long grounder to make the 2-1.
Texas State's designated player McKenzie Baack hit a two-run homer in the third to push the lead to 4-1. UCA freshman third baseman Ashlynn Tovar reached on an error in the fifth and later scored from third on a passed ball for the final run of the game.
McGregor and Bryant each had a double for the Bears. Junior right fielder Nicole Beals and sophomore center fielder Candice Gauntt both had singles.
Chandler Hall (10-12) earned the win with five strikeouts, four hits, one earned run and two walks allowed over six innings. Crystal Alaniz struck out one in a perfect seventh inning to get the save. UCA junior Cami Newsome (5-7) allowed four hits, two earned runs and three walks over six frames.
The Bears and Bobcats will wrap up the series on Sunday at noon.
