UTSA COMPLETES SWEEP OF UCA

Junior left fielder Kasey Britt hit a home run and drove in four runs on Sunday
SAN ANTONIO – UTSA completed the three-game Southland Conference series sweep over Central Arkansas with a 7-5 victory at Roadrunner Field on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners improve to 22-22 overall and 12-12 in league play, while the Bears fall to 20-26 and 7-14.

UCA sophomore center fielder Candice Gauntt led game off with a double that hit the fence in left field. After Nicole Beals’ sacrifice bunt, Gauntt scored from third on a Kasey Britt sacrifice fly to go up 1-0 in the top of the first.

In the bottom of the first, UTSA shortstop Carrie Monroe led off with a walk and scored on a base hit by third baseman Kristin Kappler to tie the game.

Jori Fox and Danye Holmes drew walks to lead off the bottom of the second. Roadrunner right fielder Samantha Beeson hit a double to left center field, driving in both runners to give UTSA a 3-1 advantage. After a Monroe base hit, Beeson scored from third on a wild pitch by junior reliever Katie McGregor.

The Bears took a back a run in the top of the third when sophomore second baseman Preslie Long led off with a double and was moved to third on a Gauntt base hit. Britt plated Long with her second sacrifice fly of the game, cutting the deficit to 4-2.

With one out in the fourth, McGregor hit a solo home run off the scoreboard in left field, her third blast of the season. Beeson led off the bottom of the fourth off with a homer that cleared the center field fence, putting the Roadrunners up 5-3.

With two outs in the fifth, Beals doubled and Britt blasted a home run to left field to tie the game at 5-5. In the bottom of the frame, first baseman Caitlyn Ivy singled and Homes hit a home run to right field to regain the lead for UTSA 7-5.

The Bears outhit the Roadrunners 10-8 for the game. Gauntt went 3-for-4 with a double and Britt was 2-for-2 with a home run, four RBI and a school record two sacrifice bunts. Sophomore catcher Melanie Bryant also added two hits. Beeson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI for UTSA. Monroe also had two hits.

Holmes (5-3) earned the win for the Roadrunners by allowing eight hits and five runs over five innings. UCA starter Cami Newsome allowed two hits, three walks and four runs in 1.1 innings. McGregor struck out three and allowed a run in 2.2 innings and sophomore Kelsie Armstrong (12-18) suffered the loss by giving up the game-winning home run to go with three strikeouts over 1.1 innings. Junior Kristen Johnson walked one and gave up a hit before inducing a double play.

The Bears will host Centenary on Wednesday at Farris Field at 5 p.m.
