SUGAR BEARS HOST UT MARTIN, PROLIFIC BACKCOURT TANDEM

Head coach Matt Daniel will coach his 100th game at UCA on Saturday
The Sugar Bears will host defending Ohio Valley Conference tournament champion UT Martin Saturday at 2 p.m., welcoming a team that features two of the nation's Top 25 scorers in sophomore guards Jasmine Newsome and Heather Butler.

Newsome is the 19th leading scorer in the country at 20.9 points per game, and Butler is tied for 24th at 19.8. The pair, who were both All-OVC selections last season as freshmen and led the Skyhawks to a 21-11 record and NCAA Tournament berth, combined for 41 points in the Skyhawks' 99-84 loss to No. 19 Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Newsome had a game-high 28 points in that game, going 12-for-12 from the free throw line. She also added eight assists, four steals and four rebounds.

The Skyhawks enter Saturday's contest with a 4-4 record, having dropped four of their last five. In addition to the loss to Vanderbilt, they have also dropped decisions to Memphis, Indiana State and Purdue. They have beaten Belmont, Air Force, Southern Miss and Saint Louis.

The Sugar Bears (6-2) will be looking to remain perfect in the Farris Center, where they are 5-0, and pick up a win in the 100th game of fourth-year head coach Matt Daniel's tenure. Daniel, who is 54-45 overall, has won nearly 70 percent of his games in the last three seasons after going 6-23 in his first year on the UCA bench.

The Sugar Bears are also chasing their first victory over the Skyhawks, trailing the all-time series 2-0 with losses in 2006 and 07. The 2006 meeting in Conway, a 79-69 Skyhawks victory, was the first game of UCA's Division I reclassification period. Current Sugar Bear assistant Caronica Randle led all scorers in that game with 26 points.

It will be the final game in the Farris Center until Dec. 30, when the Sugar Bears host UAPB. Following Saturday's game, UCA will break for finals then travel to the Bahamas for the Sport Tours International Bahamas Sunshine Shootout. The Sugar Bears will play High Point and Georgia Tech in Nassau on the 20th and 21st.
