NASSAU, Bahamas — A 14-point run early in the first half gave Central Arkansas the cushion it needed, and the Sugar Bears never relented as they led the final 37 minutes and defeated High Point 69-56 on Tuesday at the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout in Nassau.
With the game tied at eight, the Sugar Bears (8-2) scored the next 14 over a 2:45 span to pull ahead 22-8 and maintained the advantage throughout the remainder of the contest, leading by double digits for most of the way, to win their fourth straight game.
A 3-pointer from Destinee Rogers started the run, followed by a steal and layup from Desiree' Roges. Micah Rice followed with a 3-pointer of her own, then Courtney Duever added a jumper and Nakeia Guiden knocked down a pair of free throws before Rice capped the run with a layup.
High Point (4-5) never led in the contest, but was able to cut its deficit to as few as five with five minutes to play in the game. The Sugar Bears countered with a 9-0 run over the next 2:42 to push their lead back out to 14 and secure the victory. Guiden scored six of her game-high 14 points during that stretch, and Rice added another 3-point basket.
In addition to 14 points and six assists from Guiden, the Sugar Bears got 10 points from Rice and Destinee Rogers, and nine each from Desiree' Rogers and Duever. Megan Herbert, who played only 16 minutes due to foul trouble, had seven points and five rebounds. Britney Gowans and Marci Moffitt each added five points.
High Point was led by 12 points from Lindsay Puckett, with Shamia Brown pitching in 11 and Laura Whitt 10.
The Sugar Bears forced the Panthers into 23 turnovers, converting those into 23 points.
UCA will finish its stay in the Bahamas on Wednesday evening when the Sugar Bears take on Georgia Tech at 5 p.m. Central time.
