BEARS READY TO CELEBRATE HOMECOMING

Desmond Wilcox and Jessie Sims bring down a Lamar receiver last week
CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears hope to celebrate Homecoming on Saturday with their fifth consecutive victory when they face off with the Southeastern Louisiana Lions in Southland Conference action at First Security Field at Estes Stadium.

The Bears have not lost since a 53-24 loss at FBS Arkansas State on Sept. 24 in Jonesboro. UCA has put together its longest SLC winning streak since joining the league, with victories over Stephen F. Austin, Nicholls State, McNeese State and Lamar.

UCA (5-3, 4-1) has history on its side as the Bears are 10-1 in Homecoming games under head coach Clint Conque, including a 30-23 victory over Southeastern last year. The Bears’ last loss to a Homecoming opponent was in 2002 to North Alabama. UCA is 54-26-1 all-time in Homecoming games.

The matchup features two of the top passing teams in the Southland Conference. The Lions (2-5, 0-3) are ranked No. 2 in the league in passing, averaging 306.4 yards per game through the air. UCA is third at 261.0. Southeastern has three of the top-rated receivers in the conference, while UCA has two in the top 10 (juniors Jesse Grandy and Dominique Croom).

The Lions are coming off an impressive victory over independent Texas State last week, while UCA beat the Lamar Cardinals 38-24 on the road in the first meeting between the teams. UCA leads the overall series with Southeastern 3-1, with a 2-0 record in games played in Conway.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., with tailgating opening at 10 a.m. The Homecoming court and queen will be presented in a halftime ceremony. The L.B. Jackman Award, which goes to the Outstanding Player in the Homecoming game, will be presented at the end of the game.
