EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Central Arkansas' Ethan Miller scored for the second time in as many games on Wednesday, but it would not be enough for the Bears to break into the win column in Missouri Valley Conference play as UCA surrendered a goal late in regulation and played to a 1-1 draw at SIU Edwardsville.
The Bears (1-6-3, 0-1-1 MVC) took a lead early in the first half when Miller fired a penalty kick past SIUE goalkeeper Scott Meyer in the 17th minute.
The Cougars (7-3-3, 1-0-1) outshot the Bears 10-2 in the opening period but were unable to get anything past UCA goalkeeper Patxi Shortsleeve, who had four saves in the first period en route to seven total.
UCA came out with five shots in the second half, including three on goal, but Meyer was able to make stops on all three to keep the Cougars a score away. That score came in the 80th minute when Patrick Clendenny was able to sneak one past Shortsleeve from the right side of the box into the left side of the net.
The Bears had one final shot attempt in regulation by Denmark Gillings, but it missed wide.
In the overtime periods, UCA held a 6-2 shots advantage over the Cougars but Meyer made three more saves on shots by Miller, David Ngwenya and Elia Louis to preserve the tie for SIUE.
The Bears will step out of conference to take on Mercer in Macon, Ga. on Saturday before returning to Conway for three games in a row and five of their final six.
