NORMAL, Ala. — The University of Central Arkansas men's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak and made a piece of history on Wednesday, defeating Alabama A&M 2-1 in overtime in the final home game in the history of the Bulldogs' program.
Playing its final year after announcing in August that it would be disbanding its program following the 2010 season, Alabama A&M – a Division I Independent – hosted UCA for the Bulldogs' only home game in their farewell tour.
The Bears (2-6) turned the lights out on the Bulldogs (0-7) at John Hunt Park in overtime, getting the deciding goal five minutes into the extra period on a goal from senior Wynne Mason – his second game-winner of the season. Alex Ghaffari recorded his first assist of the season on the goal.
The Bears had taken a 1-0 lead early in the second period on a goal from Alex Parker off a penalty kick but the Bulldogs tied the contest with seven minutes remaining on an unassisted goal from Cesar Ramirez.
With the victory, the Bears pick up their first overtime win and road win of the season.
The Bears held a 17-11 shots advantage over the Bulldogs, with seven coming on goal. AAMU had six shots on goal, leading to five saves for UCA goalkeeper Ivan Zarate.
UCA will take on Houston Baptist on Friday then play at Memphis on Tuesday before resuming Missouri Valley Conference play on Oct. 13 at home against Eastern Illinois.
