CONWAY, Ark.- The University of Central Arkansas men's soccer team dropped their season opener to Oral Roberts 2-1 at the Bill Stephens Track/Soccer Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears (0-1) lost, despite outshooting the Golden Eagles (1-0) 13-9 overall and having a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
ORU opened the scoring the 23rd minute when Johnny Chavez beat UCA senior keeper Ivan Zarate with a pass from the left side by Jarrett Hamilton. Hamilton expanded the lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute after he scored on a breakaway pass from Gary Arauz.
The Bears cut the lead to 2-1 in the 65th minute when sophomore Alex Ghaffari fired it in past keeper Andrew Techanchuk from five feet out. Freshman Nick Figaro recorded the assist.
Techanchuck recorded six saves for the Golden Eagles. Figaro and Ghaffari each had three shots on goal for UCA.
The Bears will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Kansas City for 7 p.m. match with UMKC.
