Sugar Bears Off to West Georgia for ASUN Action

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas softball team gets set for one of its final two road games, heading to West Georgia for an ASUN matchup on Thursday. Tip-off in Carrollton, Georgia is set for 1 p.m. CT.

The Sugar Bears (17-10, 10-5 ASUN) earned their tenth ASUN win for the third-straight season last time out, gutting out a four-point win over Austin Peay on Wednesday. The win marked six-straight for the Bears, and although it snapped a five-game streak of holding opponents under 50, the defense did enough to get another win. Four Sugar Bears scored in double-figures, led by Jenna Cook and Cheyanne Cook with 14 points each. Shae Littleford added 12, and Bree Stephens added 11.

With just a few games left in the season, the Sugar Bears are in a tight race to keep a top-four seed and earn a first round bye in the ASUN Championships. Tied with two other teams in the No. 3 spot, the Sugar Bears split two games with Stetson and have a chance to sweep West Georgia and lock up tiebreakers over both. The split series with Stetson goes to a second tiebreaker, and having a higher NET rating gives Central Arkansas a leg up over the Hatters.

Central Arkansas and West Georgia played once already in Conway, with the Sugar Bears dominating an 87-66 win. Four Sugar Bears tallied 15 or more points, and Central Arkansas shot 52 percent to carry the way.

West Georgia is currently 17-9 overall, with a 10-5 record in ASUN games. On Wednesday, the Wolves needed overtime to beat Lipscomb, edging out the Bisons 66-65 in Nashville. The starting five scored all but seven points, and three of the five starters logged more than 40 minutes. Asia Donald powered the way with an 18-point, ten rebound double-double in the win.

Wednesday's result was a pretty typical game for West Georgia: The starters carry the scoring load, while Destiny Jones contributes off the bench in a low-scoring slugfest. Only six of the 15 ASUN games have seen the Wolves score more than 70 points, and West Georgia is undefeated in games in which the team scores more than 66 points.

Tip-off against WGU is set for 1 p.m. CT on Saturday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online. Fans can also keep up with all the action at The Bear 91.3, with Steve Owens on the call.
