TULSA, Okla. – After battling its way to go up in the second half, the Central Arkansas men's soccer team couldn't hold onto the lead, succumbing to Oral Roberts Tuesday night.
The Bears (1-6-2) scored multiple goals in a game for the first time this season, finding scores off the feet of
Maxim Sheenkov and
Michael Oliveri. Sheenkov scored for the second time in as many games, and Oliveri tallied his first goal of the year.
After repelling an early attack from the home team, the Bears controlled possession in the attacking half of the field, earning a couple of corner kicks and shots in the early goings. The pressure would pay off for Central Arkansas, with Sheenkov scoring in the 17
th minute to give his side an early lead. He nearly added a second goal just minutes later, putting another shot on frame in the 26
th, but the Golden Eagle keeper stopped it.
ORU made a line change midway through the first half, but the Central Arkansas midfield and defense wouldn't budge, and with the exception of another shot late in the half by
Omar Atia, neither side saw much action before the end of the first half.
The second half started much like the first half, an early shot for the home team, followed by offense in the other direction leading to a Bears score. This time, it was Oliveri finding the back of the net, thanks to a dime from Atia.
But as they say, a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous lead in soccer, and that proved to be the case against ORU. A goal in the 61
st cut the lead in half, and the Golden Eagles capitalized and scored again in the 69
th. The home team continued to carry the momentum, capping the comeback in the 78
th.
Central Arkansas now turns back to ASUN play at home on Sunday, taking on Bellarmine at the Bill Stephens Track & Soccer Complex at 4 p.m.
