CHICAGO, Ill. – The Central Arkansas volleyball team closed its weekend in the Windy City dropping a 3-0 match to DePaul.
The Sugar Bears (2-6) never quite found a rhythm offensively, and the Blue Demons were able to capitalize for the three-set win.
Laci Bohannan led the team with ten kills, and
Caylan Koons logged 21 assists.
Central Arkansas was able to go back and forth with the home team throughout the early points of the first set, trading points until the score was 5-5. The Sugar Bears pushed away with a 4-1 run, but DePaul answered with a 4-0 run of its own to take an 11-10 lead. Back-to-back points for Central Arkansas switched the lead, and the teams continued trading points until the score was 20-19 in favor of the Blue Demons. Unfortunately for the Sugar Bears, DePaul ran together a 5-0 run to take the set, capitalizing on four-straight attack errors by the Sugar Bears.
The second set started very similarly to the first, with both sides exchanging serve as points were scored. Central Arkansas led 7-5 before a 4-0 run by DePaul pushed the Blue Demons ahead 9-7, and another run extended the lead in the middle of the set. The Sugar Bears battled to get back into the set, closing the gap to seven, but it was too little, too late.
DePaul was able to carry the momentum from the end of the second into the third set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. But Central Arkansas wasn't done fighting just yet, battling back with kills by four different Sugar Bears as the team built a 9-2 run of their own to tie the game at 11-11. DePaul was able to counter with a big run of its own, reopening a seven-point lead that Central Arkansas was only able to cut to five before surrendering the set.
Central Arkansas now braces for a home-and-home with Oklahoma, playing in Norman on Thursday before hosting the Sooners in the Farris Center on Sunday, September 21
