BEARS WIN SLUGFEST, TAKE SERIES 2-1

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears won a 14-11 slugfest in the second game of a Monday doubleheader with the Lipscomb BIsons and won the ASUN series 2-1 at Bear Stadium.

Sophomore outfielder Zeb Allen did much of the slugging, tying the school record with three home runs in the nightcap. Allen, from Fort Smith, Ark., finished with five runs batted in and four runs scored. He hit home runs in his first two at-bats, and added a huge three-run shot in a four-run seventh inning that put the Bears ahead for good at 12-9.

UCA (12-18, 6-6) finished with 17 hits and Lipscomb had 16. Allen was 3 for 5, while senior second baseman Bryce Cermenelli went 4 for 5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and increased his league-leading batting average to .421. Right fielder Blaine French was 3 for 4, while catcher Casey Shipley and first baseman Jagger Schattle both had two RBI.

The Bears used four pitchers, with redshirt freshman Jake Jones earning the victory over the final 1.2 innings. He allowed two hits and two walks but kept the Bisons off the board. UCA overcame four errors and allowed just four earned runs of the 11.

In the first game, Lipscomb (12-18, 6-6) avenged UCA's run-rule victory on Sunday with its own, a 17-4 win, fueled by a 19-hit attack.  UCA shortstop Nathan Negre and designated hitter Preston Curtis had 2 hits and 2 RBI each for the Bears, including a two-run home run by Curtis in the fifth inning.

The Bears will continue their homestand with a matchup with the Little Rock Trojans at 3 p.m. Wednesday before hitting the road for an ASUN series at Bellarmine on the weekend in Louisville, Ky.
