WICHITA, Kan. – The Central Arkansas softball team played the first of two road games this week, opening at Wichita State. After scoring the first run of the game, the Bears fell 6-1 to the Shockers.
The Bears (14-18) struck first in the second inning, thanks to a
Mya January home run to left center. The freshman connected on her third home run of the season, now leading the team in the long ball category.
Madge Layfield tossed 4.2 innings, cleaning up the order the first time through without allowing a hit.
Wichita State got its offense going in the fourth inning, finding back-to-back hits including a two-run home run to take the lead. In the fifth inning,
Emma Veach led off reaching on a fielding error. Two outs later,
Madi Young walked, and
Addie Graham singled to load the bases. But with two outs already on the board, a pop-up ended the threat with the Bears still trailing. Wichita scored three more in the fifth and one more in the sixth to pull away.
January ended the day with two hits, going 2-for-3 against the Shockers. Young drew two walks and singled, reaching base all three times she went to the plate. After starting the year with four games of multiple errors in the first nine games, the Bears, after having zero errors against the Shockers, have had zero multi-error games since February 16
th.
Central Arkansas is on the road at Tulsa tomorrow before returning home for an ASUN series against Austin Peay. First pitch against the Golden Hurricane is set for 5 p.m.
