BIG INNINGS KNOCK OUT BEARS

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears allowed two big innings to the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Sunday and it resulted in a 14-6 loss in Game 2 of their non-conference series at Bear Stadium.

The Eagles (2-3) scored a combined 12 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a 4-2 UCA lead after four innings. EMU made the most of its 11 hits, while UCA had 10 but just six runs, leaving 11 runners on base.

The Bears struck first in the bottom of the first inning when they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter. A balk called on EMU pitcher Tyler Kapa allowed Keon Moseni to score for a 1-0 lead. EMU got that run back in the second with an RBI single by Connor Walsh.

After the Eagles went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fourth, UCA re-took the lead with three runs in the bottom. Catcher Casey Shipley had a base hit and scored on first baseman Jagger Schattle's double to left center. Luke Carner followed with a single and stole second base. Left fielder Zeb Allen plated both runs with a base hit through the left side, good for a 4-2 lead.

But that was shortlived as EMU put up six runs on four hits in the fifth. UCA countered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning when Bryce Cermenelli had an RBI double to score Moseni and Sam Reynolds had a sacrifice fly that brought in Cermenelli.

Shipley finished 3 for 4, while Moseni was 2 for 4 and scored twice. Allen was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI. UCA used five pitchers, with the first three all allowing at least three earned runs. Freshman Luke Lorence came on and pitched a scoreless inning and fellow freshman Tate Collins went the final three innings, allowing no hits and striking out one.

The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Monday.
