TURNOVERS HURT BEARS IN LOSS TO ROYALS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ The University of Central Arkansas shot the ball well enough to win Tuesday night but turnovers doomed the Bears in an 89-72 loss to the Queens Royals in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Curry Arena.

UCA shot 47.9 percent overall, including 61.1 percent in the second half, and made 10 three-pointers and 16 of 18 at the free-throw line. But 18 UCA turnovers led to 30 points for Queens, which also made 16 three-pointers after hitting 14 in the previous meeting last month in Conway.

"Their pressure bothered us," said UCA head coach John Shulman. "Give them credit, they pressured us defensively and we didn't handle it very well. We had to go away from Princeton (offense) and do some ball-screen stuff, and that's disappointing. If you're going to try to be a Princeton offense, you have to be able to claim your space and we were never able to do that."

UCA sophomore point guard Brayden Fagbemi scored a team-high 19 points, with 17 of those coming in the second half. He was 4 of 6 from three-point range as UCA finished 10 of 23 (43.5 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bears were 6 of 7 in the second half.

Senior Elias Cato, back in the lineup for the first time since Jan. 29 because of an injury, had 15 points and went 8 of 9 at the free-throw line. Two other Bears had double figures, including sophomore Michael Evbagharu with 12 and freshman Nehemiah Turner with 11.

"We had nine assists and 18 turnovers. Looking at that, we should have gotten beat by 40 points," said Shulman. "And now it's a quick turnaround. I was very plain and simple with them, we have to win one of our next three (games). We go to West Georgia on Thursday. We have to figure out a way to win a game.

"I tell you though, it was good getting Elias back in there and getting him in the flow before Thursday."

Queens' Chris Ashby, who made nine threes in the first meeting, was 7 of 14 from the arc Tuesday for a team-high 25 points.

UCA and West Georgia, tied for the 10th and final spot to make the ASUN Tournament, will meet at 6:45 (CST) on Thursday before the Bears return home for the final time next Monday for Senior Night against North Alabama.
