BEARS DROP SERIES WITH LOSS TO DEMONS



NATCHITOCHES, La. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears scored first Sunday afternoon but the Northwestern State Demons outscored the Bears 11-2 after that to take an 11-2 victory at Brown-Stroud Field. 

The Demons (2-1) won the series 2-1 after the Bears won the opener on Friday. 

UCA took a first-inning lead when sophomore left fielder Zeb Allen led off with a walk and advance to second on Bryce Cermenelli's walk. Catcher Casey Shipley brought in Allen with an RBI single up the middle. NSU did much the same in the bottom of the inning, tying it at 1-1 with a hit by pitch, walk and RBI single.

NSU added two more runs in the third inning, while UCA picked up its second run in the fifth when freshman Nathan Negre doubled and scored on Cermenelli's single to cut the deficit in half at 3-2.

But the Demons got a grand slam in the seventh and added three more runs in the eighth. UCA brought across one more run in the top of the ninth when Negre and Cermenelli had consecutive base hits and Negre scored all the way from second on a wild pitch.

UCA starter Coleman MacRae, a junior righthander from Rogers, Ark., went 4.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 3 runs while striking out 5 and walking 3. The Bears used five other pitchers, with senior Perry Titlow striking out three and allowing 1 hit and 1 run in 1.2 innings.

Negre, a freshman from Aurora, Mo., and Ceremenelli, a junior from Norco, Calif., had two hits each as UCA totaled nine on the day. NSU finished with 11 hits, including three by shortstop Samuel Stephenson.

UCA is scheduled for its home opener at 3 p.m. Tuesday, but expected winter weather may alter that schedule The Bears will also be at home next weekend for a four-game series with Eastern MIchigan. The teams are scheduled for a doubleheader on Friday (1:00 and 4:00 p.m.), a single game on Saturday at 4 p.m. and the finale at noon Sunday at Bear Stadium.
