Bears Win on Hall of Fame Weekend

CONWAY, Ark. — Central Ark. (2-4) secured a 23-17 victory over Utah Tech (1-5) at Estes Stadium during Hall of Fame Weekend, with the Bears converting all three of their red zone opportunities into points.

The first quarter began with Central Arkansas receiving the kickoff and initiating a methodical drive. Landen Chambers showcased his rushing ability early, gaining first downs and propelling the offense into Utah Tech territory. This marked his third game in a row with over 100 yards rushing, a testament to his consistent performance. However, the drive stalled when a pass by Chambers was intercepted at the Utah Tech 8-yard line, halting Central Arkansas's momentum.

Central Arkansas's defense responded effectively, with Ny'Len Ramon Jones and Mark Dorsey leading efforts to limit Utah Tech's advance. Despite a turnover and a subsequent drive from the Trailblazers, Central Arkansas's defense held firm, forcing punts and maintaining a scoreless tie at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began with the Bears capitalizing on a turnover on downs by Utah Tech. Despite an incomplete deep pass by Austin Myers, making his first start at quarterback, Central Arkansas advanced the ball with a 5-yard rush from Chambers. However, the drive concluded with a 42-yard punt by Trace Beard, resulting in a touch-back.

Utah Tech responded with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Bronson Barben to Eric Olsen, taking a 7-0 lead. Central Arkansas quickly countered, highlighted by a 41-yard pass from Myers to Arlie Lee, setting up a 7-yard touchdown run by Chapman McKown. Caleb Jones added the extra point, tying the game at 7-7.

As the quarter progressed, the Bears gained momentum. Myers connected with Tyrell Pollard for an 18-yard gain, and Chambers secured a first down with consecutive rushes. A 28-yard field goal by Jones then gave Central Arkansas a 10-7 advantage. Utah Tech managed a late 30-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10 before halftime.

The third quarter began with Utah Tech striking first, completing a 46-yard touchdown pass to increase their lead to 17-10. Central Arkansas responded swiftly with a drive led by Myers, who connected with Pollard for a 21-yard touchdown pass. This tied the game at 17-17 after Jones converted the extra point.

Following a defensive stop, the Bears capitalized on excellent field position. Chambers' rushing efforts set up a successful 39-yard field goal by Jones, pushing the team ahead 20-17. The quarter concluded with Central Arkansas maintaining possession, ensuring a narrow lead into the final quarter.

Central Arkansas opened the fourth quarter with a strategic punt by Beard, pinning Utah Tech deep in their own territory. The defensive unit, led by Jakobe Shell and Trevion Traylor, effectively stopped Utah Tech's momentum by forcing a turnover on downs after a missed 53-yard field goal attempt. This defensive stand set the stage for Central Arkansas to extend their lead.

Central Arkansas capitalized on the defensive stop with a 39-yard pass from Myers to Pollard, advancing the ball deep into Utah Tech's half. Although the drive stalled, Jones successfully converted a 33-yard field goal to increase Central Arkansas' lead to 23-17. As the quarter drew to a close, Jacoby McQuiller intercepted a pass, effectively sealing the victory for Central Arkansas. The game concluded with Central Arkansas maintaining their lead and securing a 23-17 win.

Chambers led the rushing attack for Central Arkansas, finishing with 108 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Myers completed 20 of 31 passes for 223 yards and threw one touchdown. On the receiving end, Pollard recorded three catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, McQuiller contributed with an interception, returning it for 11 yards and Ashtyn Williams added 10 total tackles.

Central Ark. improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play following the victory. Utah Tech fell to 1-5 overall and remained winless in conference play at 0-2.

Looking ahead, Central Arkansas will travel to Florence, Ala., to face North Alabama on October 11. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
