CONWAY, Ark. – With the final regular season match on Saturday, the Central Arkansas women's soccer team will celebrate its seniors as it tries to clinch a spot in postseason. The Bears will face North Alabama on Saturday, kicking off against the Lions at 1 p.m. at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
The Bears (6-8-2, 3-4-2 ASUN) wrap up their three-game homestand on Saturday, needing a win to make the ASUN Championship. Lipscomb, in first place, was defeated by Bellarmine, who jumped the Bears in the standings with the three points. That put Central Arkansas a point out of postseason with one match left. That leaves Central Arkansas with two scenarios to make the postseason: either win and jump North Alabama in the standings, or a draw against the Lions with a Bellarmine loss at home against Austin Peay. The latter scenario would have the Bears and Knights tied in the standings, and the Bears hold the tie-breaker over Bellarmine.
But pulling this off is no easy feat, since the last time the Bears and Lions faced off, it resulted in a 1-0 loss for Central Arkansas. The Lions scored in the 12
th minute in Florence, and that was all it took to get a result. UNA has been particularly stingy since the start of conference play, allowing only nine goals in nine matches. The Lions have also only allowed multiple goals in one ASUN match this season, that coming against No. 1 Lipscomb on October 5
th.
Before the match, however, the Bears will celebrate their seniors. With a class of nine, the Bears will take time pregame to honor their accomplishments and achievements. Over four years, this team has compiled 29 wins, captured three top-three finishes in the ASUN, and reached three ASUN Championship Semifinals.
UNA (7-5-5, 3-3-3 ASUN) enters the weekend needing any positive result to stay in postseason. With a tie, the Lions will stay one spot above the Bears and clinch the final postseason berth, and a win could help them jump up in the final standings.
As aforementioned, it's been almost a month since the UNA defense has allowed multiple goals, but the Lions have given up one in four-straight matches, going 1-1-2 in that stretch. Last time out, it was a 1-0 loss to Bellarmine on senior day, thanks to a 66
th minute score from the Knights. UNA outshot Bellarmine 17-6, including 12 shots on goal, but just couldn't find the net.
Kickoff against the Lions is set for 1 p.m., with senior day festivities roughly 25 minutes before kickoff. The match will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats available online. As always, admittance to Central Arkansas soccer is free.
