CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team wrapped up a three-game road trip at Austin Peay on Sunday, claiming a 2-2 tie to stay unbeaten in ASUN play.
The Bears moved to 4-5-1 overall with a 3-0-1 showing in conference, playing Austin Peay to a tie in a downpour in Clarksville. Central Arkansas had two first-time scorers tally goals in
Brianna Lopez and
Kayla Hurley.
Lopez nearly got the Bears up early, forcing a save in the fifth minute of the match, but the Governor keeper was able to get in front of it. Fifteen minutes later, the Govs scored the first goal of the match on a PK, the first real scoring opportunity of the match for the home team. Central Arkansas tried to answer with three shots over the next five minutes, including one on goal from
Kelly Van Gundy, but the Bears couldn't find the back of the net.
Anna Kerr and
Jama Akpanudo had shots on goal just past the 30-minute mark, but again, the Govs were able to keep the shots out of the net. Hurley had one last attempt before the halftime whistle, but the Bears went into the break trailing 1-0.
But it wouldn't take much time in the second half for Central Arkansas to finally find a goal. A corner kick by the Bears would hover inside the box, always a dangerous thing to have happen, and finally, Lopez was able to get a foot on it and put it in to level the score. Kerr nearly gave the Bears the lead just a few minutes later, but her shot wouldn't make it past the line.
Central Arkansas would continue to control possession in the attacking third, making runs into the box and peppering the Austin Peay goalkeeper with shots. Finally,
Nina Mazzola found Akpanudo, who spun and found Hurley waiting. The freshman beamed a shot from right to left, curling it over the keeper's hands to give the Bears the lead.
But the lead would only last for ten minutes, as the conditions of the field made every ball fast across the wet grass. This allowed the transition game to be deadly, as the Governors were able to take a ball down quickly and snake a shot in to tie the game again. Then, with seconds left, as the Austin Peay keeper came out to catch a ball, another Governor bumped her, causing the keeper to drop the ball in the net, but the play was called dead for a Central Arkansas foul, taking away the final scoring chance for the Bears.
Central Arkansas returns home for the next three games, hosting Eastern Kentucky on Thursday. Kickoff against the Colonels is set for 7 p.m. at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex.
