Volleyball Stumbles in Opening Day of Roadrunner Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Two matches in San Antonio, and the Central Arkansas volleyball team had a tough day in the Roadrunner Classic, dropping both matches on Friday.

Game One: UTSA – 3, Central Arkansas – 0
The first match of the day seemed like it would go the Sugar Bears' way; the team jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before allowing a single point. But from there, Central Arkansas would cling to a small lead, trading points back and forth with the home team. Tied at 22-22, the Sugar Bears just couldn't hang on, committing an error and giving up a kill to surrender the first set.

The second set really got away from the Sugar Bears, as they were the ones to get off to a slow start, and the home team never looked back. Set three was competitive like the first set, with neither team building even a three-point lead until the Roadrunners went up 21-18. The Sugar Bears rattled off a 3-0 run to tie the game, but couldn't quite get over the hump, falling in straight sets after giving up the final set 26-24.

Game Two: Sam Houston – 3, Central Arkansas – 0
After waiting for a couple of matches ahead of them, the Sugar Bears took the court again against Sam Houston. But after being tied 4-4, the Bearkats were able to get on an extended run, ultimately taking the first set. In the second set, the Sugar Bears took got up 10-7, but a 4-1 run tied the set. The teams would go back and forth until the scores were again tied at 20-20, until Sam Houston put together a 5-0 run to seal the second.

The third set was also extremely competitive, with both sides dueling back and forth. The Sugar Bears were finding a rhythm that wasn't there in the first two sets, and they seemed poised to make a run, doing so to take a 17-12 lead. But once again, the Bearkats were able to chip away at the lead and eventually take the third set.

Through two matches, Regan Harp tallied 15 kills and 16 digs, continuing to show her versatility. Kaylan Coons had 24 assists and ten digs in the first set for her third double-double of the season, while Alexis McDaniel tallied 33 digs to lead the Sugar Bears. Central Arkansas has one more match tomorrow, playing Alabama at 11 a.m.
