WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After leading the game at halftime, the Central Arkansas men's soccer team couldn't quite hang on against No. 15 Wake Forest, falling in the late stages of the match on the road.
The Bears (1-1) came out swinging against the Demon Deacons, and ultimately started the scoring in the 19
th minute. A great double-assist from
Andres Robles and
Devonte Richards finished with the ball in the pocket of
Kevin Ventura, and the senior finished the job to give the Bears an early lead. It marked the third assist of the season for Richards, who led the Bears last season with six.
Central Arkansas struck again just a couple of minutes later, this time it was
Sohma Ichikawa finding
Charles-Emile Brunet for a second goal. The lead had the Bears up multiple scores over the nationally ranked Demon Deacons, and in the driver's seat. Despite being outshot 12-6, with a 5-3 disadvantage in shots on goal, the Bears held through the rest of the first half to go into the locker room up two.
But as the second half went along, Wake Forest started to gain some momentum, eventually scoring its first goal in the 67
th minute. It wouldn't take long for the Demon Deacons to score again and level the match, earning a PK just a couple of minutes later. The home team finished off the comeback in the 73
rd minute, scoring the game-winner and holding off the Bears to the final whistle.
Central Arkansas is off until next Sunday, when the Bears will head to Memphis, Tennessee for a battle with the Tigers. Kickoff in the Bluff City is set for 6 p.m.
