CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears could not pull off a second upset in as many days Sunday, dropping their series finale 11-6 to first-place Austin Peay in their final home game of the season on Mother's Day at Bear Stadium.
The Bears (22-26, 12-15) knocked off the Governors on Saturday but fell behind early Sunday and could never come all the way back. APSU (33-18, 18-9), the top offensive team in the nation, hit a grand slam in the second inning and never trailed, adding two more home runs to their nation-leading total.
The Bears chipped away with two runs in the third inning when senior catcher
Hayden Seldomridge doubled to lead off the inning and scored when second baseman
Tanner Leonard followed with another double. Senior first baseman
A.J. Mendolia added a sacrifice fly to bring in Leonard and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Â
APSU put up single runs in the fourth and sixth and UCA added another in the sixth on another Seldomridge double that scored
Mason King from first base. The Governors then put up four more runs in the seventh on four hits, without the aid of a homer.
An infield single by right fielder
Kade Seldomridge scored Mendolia in the seventh to make it 10-4. The Bears would add two more runs in the bottom of the ninth on a
Bryce Cermenelli base hit and a two-run home run to left center by designated hitter
Casey Shipley, his team-high eight of the season.
The Bears, still fighting for a spot in the ASUN postseason tournament, got two hits each from
Hayden Seldomridge and Cermenelli and a pair of RBI from Shipley. A combination of five APSU pitchers recorded 10 strikeouts.
UCA closes the regular season with four games on the road, beginning Tuesday night at Little Rock. The Bears will finish conference play on the road Thursday-Saturday at Stetson in DeLand, Fla., which is also the site of the ASUN Tournament, which begins Tuesday, May 21. Â
