BEARS BLAST LIONS TO WIN ASUN SERIES




FLORENCE, Ala. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears scored 14 runs on 14 hits to down the North Alabama Lions 14-4 in eight innings on Saturday and win their ASUN Conference series at Mike D. Lane Field.

The Bears (19-22, 9-11), who won their sixth straight game, got a grand slam for the second consecutive day among their 14 hits and outscored the Lions 14-1 over the final eight innings after staking UNA to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Designated hitter Preston Curtis highlighted a five-run sixth inning with a grand slam that gave the Bears a 10-3 advantage. UCA then added four more runs in the eighth to invoke the 10-run rule. Catcher Casey Shipley had a two-run blast that scored Curtis in that inning.

UCA's 14 hits came from eight different players. Freshman Zeb Allen, batting lead off, went 4 for 6, while senior first baseman A.J. Mendolia was 2 for 4 with 3 runs batted in. Junior second baseman Tanner Leonard had three hits and scored three runs.

UCA starter Charlie Christensen, a sophomore righthander from Olathe, Kan., tied his career high with eight strikeouts and went six innings, allowing just two hits and three runs. Graduate Mason Griffin pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out three.

UCA's second inning featured a three-run double to right center by Mendolia that tied the game at 3-3. SIngle runs in the fourth and fifth innings came from a Bryce Cermenelli sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Allen.

The series finale will be at 1 p.m. Sunday.
