CONWAY, Ark. – The softball Bears are on the road for their first ASUN series of the year, heading out to Clarksville, Tennessee to face Austin Peay in a three-game series. It marks the second series of the year for the Bears. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., before a 1 p.m. series finale on Sunday.
Central Arkansas heads to the Volunteer State with an 8-20 record overall and an 0-3 start to conference. Earlier this week, the Bears fell in a tightly contested battle with Missouri State, falling 7-6 after nearly coming back from down 4-0.
Morgan Nelson bombed her third home run of the season against the Bears, and
Reese Parker tossed 5.2 innings of work, striking out two.
Kylie Griffin picked up her 30
th hit of the season and leads the team with a .361 average. The junior also leads the team with 16 runs and four steals. She is second on the team in on base percentage, with her .436 on-base percentage trailing only
Gracie St. Hilaire's .456.
Austin Peay holds a record of 14-14 entering the weekend, also with an 0-3 ASUN record. The Governors were swept by North Florida to start the ASUN slate, getting outscored 9-3 over three games. Austin Peay batted .203 in the series, led by Kendyl Weinzapfel's .429 average, with eight players recording a hit in the series.
On the season, Kylie Campbell holds the team's highest batting average, hitting .414 in 87 at bats. Campbell, with 36 hits, is one of six Govs to have 20-plus hits this season. But more impressive by the Governor offense is the 11 triples so far this season. Six players have a three-bagger this season, and three players have three triples this season.
The all-time series between the Bears and Govs is 1-1. Austin Peay won the first-ever meeting in 2018, before the Bears evened the series in last year's ASUN Tournament. Winning 10-1, the Bears tallied 10 hits, including multiple hits from
Tremere Harris and
McKayla Betts.
First pitch on Saturday is set for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, with a 1 p.m. first pitch to close the series on Sunday. All three games will be on ESPN+, and live stats will be available online.
