CONWAY, Ark. _ After opening the season with a pair of road games against Power 4 schools, the University of Central Arkansas Bears will finally make their home debut at 6:30 Wednesday night when they host the Randall Saints at the Farris Center.
UCA (0-2) is coming off losses at BYU last Tuesday and at Utah on Thursday. Randall, out of Moore, Okla., competes at the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletics Association) level and is 2-0.
The Bears, under new head coach John Shulman, faced two of their five Power 4 schools right out of the gate and played in front of crowds of 16,941 at BYU and 6,722 at Utah.
UCA features 12 new players on the roster, including three in the starting lineup. They are joined by returnees
Elias Cato, a 6-foot-9 senior from Queensland, Australia, and Glory Etim, a 6-9 junior from Richmond, Calif., who played at North Little Rock High School and Bowling Green before coming to UCA.
The newcomers in the lineup include 5-11 guard
Layne Taylor from Farmington, Ark., 6-foot guard
Brayden Fagbemi from Naperville, Ill., and Johns Hopkins University and 6-8 guard/forward
Diogo (DJ) Seixas from Albufeira, Portugal and San Jose State.
The Bears are averaging 56.5 points against two top quality opponents and have made a combined 18 three-pointers by eight different players. Taylor and Cato both have four threes, while Fagbemi has three. Cato leads the Bears in scoring at 12.0 points per game, including 21 points at Utah.
Nehemiah Turner, a 6-10 freshman forward, averages a team-best 7.0 rebounds per game and Fagbemi a team-high 5.5 assists.
UCA will be back on the road on Saturday, taking on Western Illinois in McComb, Ill., before hosting a pair of home games next week in Southeast Missouri on Thursday (6:30) and UNC-Asheville on Sunday (1:00).Â
