Sugar Bears Sweep Wolves to Stay Perfect at Prince Center

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas volleyball team swept the West Georgia Wolves on Sunday, dominating from start to finish.

The Sugar Bears improved to 12-9 overall and 9-1 in ASUN matches, inching closer to a locked-in postseason berth. Central Arkansas also stayed perfect in the Prince Center, moving to 6-0 at home.

Set one opened up with a Sugar Bear blitz, with the home team racing out to an 8-1 run. In addition to quality offense, Shelbi Owens cranked up the momentum to 11, hitting three-straight aces to power up the home team. Laci Bohannan helped the effort, dealing seven kills in the opening set. Central Arkansas cruised to the first-set win, taking it 25-17 after recovering late from a 7-2 run by the Wolves.

The break in play between sets calmed down the momentum for Central Arkansas, allowing the Wolves to start the second set on a much better note. The teams battled back and forth, trading the lead several times as the scores rose. Every small run was matched with a run for the other side, and the teams fought to 18-18. Diverse offense from the Sugar Bears took over from there, executing a 7-3 run to close it out.

The third set also started very competitive, as the Wolves jumped out to a 7-5 lead. Central Arkansas responded with a 6-0 run to claim an 11-7 lead, capitalizing on WGU errors to pull ahead. Points went back and forth through the teens, before a 7-1 run broke it open, with a Bohannan kill sending the Prince Center crowd into a frenzy. A few points later, the Sugar Bears walked it off after an error on the Wolves.

Bohannan and Mackenzie Vernon each had double-digit kills, with 14 and 11, respectively. Caylan Koons continued to excel at setter, putting up 43 assists in three sets. It marked the most assists in a three-set match by the junior this season. The Sugar Bears were all over the place defensively, with four players logging seven or more digs, led by Alexis McDaniels' 16.

The Sugar Bears are back on the road for the next one, playing at North Alabama on Wednesday. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Florence, Alabama.
