BEARS COOL OFF IN ASUN LOSS TO GOVERNORS

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears could not sustain their hot shooting streak on Saturday afternoon against one of the best defensive teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference, dropping a 94-71 decision to the Austin Peay Governors at F&M Bank Arena.

Two days after hitting a school-record 19 three-pointers in a win at Lipscomb, the Bears struggled from the perimeter Saturday. UCA was just 5 of 18 (27.8 percent) from three-point range, including 2 of 11 in the first half. The cold first half resulted in a 47-36 halftime deficit, one they could never overcome. Only junior Elias Cato had double figures with 11 points and six rebounds in the first half, but it was countered by APSU's highest scoring first half of the season.

"The shots weren't falling quite as much," said UCA head coach Anthony Boone. "We actually did a pretty good job finishing around the basket, and that was really good for us. But we didn't get as many opportunities outside, and the ones we got, we didn't make as many. Austin Peay did a great job of spreading their defense out and covering the three and forcing us to take more shots at the basket.

"And our guys did, and we hit quite a few of those."

The Bears (7-14, 3-2) never got untracked offensively, although they did score four points more than the Governors normally allow defensively. UCA graduate transfer Daniel Sofield led the way with 17 points, hitting three of UCA's eight threes. Junior Elias Cato added 16 points and a team-high 8 rebounds, while freshman Tucker Anderson scored 10 points but made no three-pointers after connecting six times at Lipscomb. Freshman Javion Guy-King came off the bench and had 9 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists.

APSU's Sai Witt came of the bench and led the Governors (10-10, 3-2) with 27 points, making 9 of 11 from the field. Ja'Monta Black and Demarcus Sharp added 20 points each as APSU shot 54.5 percent from the field and 47.6 percent (10 of 21) from beyond the three-point arc. Black and Isaac Haney combined to go 9 of 15 from three-point range. Sharp entered the game as the No. 2 scorer in the ASUN, averaging 17.8 points per game and topped his average late in the game.

"Austin Peay came out shooting better than normal," said Boone. "So I think we kind of understand how Lipscomb feels now. Austin Peay did a great job of making shots. We had a pretty good game plan to slow Sharp down, and early on he didn't get a lot of points. But his teammates were making quite a few baskets and that's what opened the game up for them."

UCA is back on the road next Wednesday, taking on the Queens Royals in Charlotte, N.C. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (CST).
