Bears Remain Unbeaten in ASUN Matches with Draw against Stetson

CONWAY, Ark. – The sun and humidity was as stifling as the defenses were on Sunday, as the Central Arkansas women's soccer team dueled the Stetson Hatters to a 0-0 draw. Despite not getting a win, the Bears stayed perfect in ASUN matches, extending their unbeaten streak to four matches.

The decision moved Central Arkansas to 4-5-3 on the season, with a 3-0-1 record in conference games. Kelly Van Gundy turned in a great performance despite not scoring, putting six shots on goal. It marked a career-high for the midfielder, who is tied for team-lead in scoring.

Central Arkansas opened with the same aggression that has gotten them through three wins to open ASUN games, leading to an early shot on goal for Anna Kerr. Despite the save, it was a signof things to come for both sides. Megan Moudy followed it up with another shot on goal in the tenth minute, but it too was stopped by the keeper. Central Arkansas would take four shots in the first half, three on goal, but each time the Hatters were able to keep it out of the net.

Meanwhile, Stetson struggled to create quality offensive opportunities. Outside of two shots and the lone corner kick of the half, the Hatters never really tested Kajsa Pruner. Behind a back line loaded with experience and talent, Stetson's offense could only drive into the corners before losing the ball to either a clearance or a goal kick.

After making some halftime adjustments, Van Gundy and the Bears continued to pressure the Hatter defense. As time ticked away, the Bears created multiple clean chances to score, but were just missing the final touch or one more pass, coming up short from finding the goal. But the Bears were not alone in their efforts to create: Stetson also switched some things up, moving the ball down the field through the middle of the second half. But the defense held strong, allowing just two shots in the second half.

Van Gundy put one more shot on goal in the 83rd minute, forcing another save from the Hatter keeper, marking the last real opportunity for either side. On the day, Central Arkansas outshot Stetson 13-4, with a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Pruner had a pretty quiet day minding the net, making just one save but earning her fourth clean sheet of the season.

Central Arkansas is on the road all week next week, heading to Austin Peay on Thursday before playing the Lipscomb Bisons on Sunday.
