CONWAY, Ark. – Still on the road for game two, the Central Arkansas women's soccer team remains in Texas to take on Texas State Sunday afternoon. The 1 p.m. kickoff is set for the second-straight road match for the Bears.
Last time out was not an ideal start to the season for the Bears, who fell to 0-1 after suffering a defeat at the hands of UTSA on Thursday.
Kelly Van Gundy scored the first goal of the season on a PK, but offense was otherwise difficult to generate. Three players saw their first action, with
Megan Moudy,
Caroline Billings, and
Emerson Kercher making their first appearances in Purple and Gray.
But four times last season, Central Arkansas responded to a loss with a win in the next game, setting the stage for Sunday's matchup against the Bobcats. Last time the teams met was in 2020, where the Bears took a 2-0 win in San Marcos. And though no one of the goal scorers remain on the team, seniors Emily Wissel-Littman and
Sydney Brough were on the squad last time these teams faced.
The Bobcats started 2023 with a win, downing McNeese 3-1 at home on Thursday. After a scoreless first 40 minutes and change, McNeese tallied the first goal in the 43
rd minute, striking right before half. But Texas State responded in a big way in the second half, scoring three goals in a 3:02 span from the 71
st to the 74
th minutes, storming back for an emphatic win. Six Bobcats were awarded a point in the match, and Zoe Junior was credited with three, a goal and an assist.
Junior, along with teammate Madi Goss, are the two returning Bobcats that scored double-figure points last season, with Goss registering 21 points on nine goals and three assists. Junior added ten, scoring four goals with two assists.
Sunday's match is set for 1 p.m. at Texas State's Bobcat Soccer Complex, and will be streamed on ESPN+. Live stats are also available for the afternoon battle.
