JACKSONVILLE, Ala. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears dug themselves a deep hole on Saturday and eventually fell 10-3 to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in Game 2 of their ASUN series at Jim Case Stadium.
JSU (24-25, 17-9) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, then stretched that to 8-1 after seven innings. UCA (21-28, 12-14) scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings but it was not enough. The Gamecocks hit two more home runs _ after hitting six on Friday _ including a three-run shot by Javon Hernandez in the third and a grand slam by T.J. Reeves in the seventh.
UCA sophomore second baseman
Tanner Leonard hit his second homer of the season in the eighth inning to make it 8-2 but JSU picked up two more in the bottom of the frame with a RBI infield single and a bases-loaded walk.
The Bears, who have lost four straight games, got their final run in the top of the ninth when Leonard drew a two-out walk, stole second and third and came home on a throwing error by the JSU catcher.
Drew Sturgeon followed with a base hit and a steal before JSU closed it out.
Leonard scored two of UCA's three runs while designated hitter
Connor Flagg had two of UCA's six hits. UCA starter
Cade Fenton struck out seven, including an immaculate inning in the first with three strikeouts on nine pitchers.
The series finale is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
