BEARS RALLY LATE BUT FALL TO FLAMES

LYNCHBURG, Va. _ The Liberty Flames put together two five-run innings on Friday night to down the University of Central Arkansas Bears 11-6 in ASUN action at Worthington Field.

The Flames (14-16, 6-5) scored five in both the fourth and sixth innings and totaled 14 hits to win their second straight over the Bears (13-17, 5-6) and take the series in the teams' first meeting.

UCA scored first in the top of the first on senior Kolby Johnson's RBI base hit through the left side that scored freshman left fielder Kade Seldomridge. However, the Bears could not put across another run until the seventh inning.

Liberty tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the first and then punched in five more runs in the fourth, two on bases-loaded walks. In the sixth, the first six batters reached base for Liberty, with five of those scoring, to make it an 11-1 lead.

UCA began chipping away in the seventh with a pair of runs on a RBI single by Seldomridge and a sacrifice fly by junior A.J. Mendolia. The Bears got three more runs in the ninth on one swing by Johnson. His three-run blast to left field scored Mendolia and center fielder Drew Sturgeon, who both had base hits.

UCA left 10 runners on base and could not take full advantage of three Liberty errors. Johnson finished 2 for 5 with 4 RBI, while Sturgeon and Seldomridge had two hits each. The Bears' starter Payton Windham took the loss. Liberty starter Garrett Gainey struck out 10 over 6.2 innings and allowed three unearned runs to get the victory.

The series finale is set for 9 a.m. (CT) to accommodate UCA's travel plans.
