BEARS TAKE SERIES WITH 7-5 WIN OVER ROYALS

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears used a different method to win their second consecutive game in their ASUN series with Queens on Saturday.

After blasting the Royals 15-2 on Friday, UCA rallied with three late runs to earn a 7-5 win and take the series. Game 3 is set for noon on Sunday.

UCA (13-14, 5-3) got two runs in the seventh inning on Reid Bowman's lead-off home run and doubles by Drew Sturgeon and Kolby Johnson. That made it a 6-5 UCA lead before the Bears added an insurance run in the eighth on a Bowman sacrifice fly that brought in Tyler Monroe, who reached on a fielding error.

Bowman, a sophomore shortstop from Little Rock, finished 3 for 3 with 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored. Sturgeon, a junior center fielder from Farmington, Ark., was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. The Bears finished with 12 hits to total 28 in the first two games of the series.

After allowing three runs to the Royals (5-22, 1-7) in the top of the first inning, the Bears got back in it quickly with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Sturgeon's fifth home run of the season and Johnson's RBI single.

UCA took its first lead with a pair of runs in the second on two hits and an error. Bowman had an RBI infield single and Sturgeon added a base hit up the middle to give UCA a 4-3 lead. Queens tied it in the third and took a 5-4 lead in the sixth before UCA scored the final three runs of the game.

UCA junior right hander Trent Gregson from Longview, Texas, pitched four shutout innings to close out the victory. He struck out three and allowed just one hit. The Royals got three hits and three RBI from right fielder Connor Manco, but committed three errors that led to three unearned runs.

Johnson and second baseman Tanner Leonard each had two hits for the Bears.
