BATON ROUGE, La. – Day two of the LSU Tiger Classic brought another win over Ohio for the Bears, but also saw their historic undefeated streak to start the season end, falling 1-0 to No. 18 LSU in the night cap. But the true highlight of the day came on the first at bat of the day, with a school record being rewritten.
Game one of the day also saw history for
Jenna Wildeman, who stole her 103
rd base in the first inning against the Bobcats, setting a new record for stolen bases in a Central Arkansas career, passing Kayla Crutchmer's record of 102. Crutchmer and Wildeman were teammates in the latter's first year on campus in 2020. With her 103rd steal, Wildeman is second among active Division I players in stolen bases.
GAME 1: UCA – 5, Ohio – 4
Central Arkansas jumped out to an early lead to open the day, as Wildeman set her record after getting on base in the first at bat of the game. Moving to third, Wildeman scored after getting driven in on a sacrifice fly from
Madi Young.
The Bears added two more in the second inning; Wildeman again making a play, taking a walk with the bases loaded to walk
Erin Michael home. On the next at bat,
Tremere Harris reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed
Josie Willingham to score from third. Suddenly, it was 3-0 for Central Arkansas after just two innings.
Saturday's first outing settled down for a couple of innings, before the Bears added two more runs in the fifth inning. Getting walked with a full count, Harris got in on the base-stealing fun, swiping second to get in scoring position with no outs. Young stepped back up to the plate with an RBI already in the game and delivered a well-struck double to bring Harris home. Keeping Young circling the bases, a couple of batters later saw
Colleen Bare ground out, but the junior shortstop on third base was quick enough to scamper home to lift the lead to five runs.
But Ohio wasn't done; down to their last three outs, the Bobcats waited until the seventh to start generating offense. A leadoff triple was quickly brought home to eliminate the shutout, followed by six-straight batters moving base runners, producing three more runs and a pair of fielders choices providing two outs. With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh in a one-run game,
Jordan Johnson earned the save, inducing a fly ball to left field to hold on for the win.
GAME 2: UCA – 0, #18 LSU – 1
The toughest battle so far for the Bears, the nationally ranked Tigers and the Bears were a combined 15-0 coming into the contest, with both teams dominating in the circle thus far in the year. And deliver the pitchers did;
Jordan Johnson kept the Tigers hitless until the fourth, keeping the batters guessing until the third time around, when LSU finally got on base with a single. A couple of ground outs allowed the runner to advance, sneaking home on a bobbled gather by Central Arkansas.
Continuing to fight through adversity, the Bears had chances in the sixth inning, as
Jenna Wildeman got on with a single and one out, hoping to spark something. But a fielder's choice that took the left fielder out at second stalled things momentarily, as
Madi Young was able to move
Tremere Harris to second base with a single of her own, putting a Bear in scoring position for the first time. Unfortunately, an unreviewable play at shortstop halted what probably was Central Arkansas' best chance, sending the Purple and Gray back to the dugout and back out on defense.
The Bears will get one more crack at LSU on Sunday, playing at 12:30 p.m. to close out Central Arkansas' time at the Tiger Classic.
