CONWAY, Ark. _ When the University of Central Arkansas Bears host the UAPB Golden Lions on Monday night at the Farris Center, it will be the first time for the teams to meet in nearly 30 years.
The Bears (1-1) and Golden Lions (2-1), whose campuses are just 70 minutes apart, last played way back in 1994. UAPB won that game 78-68 in Pine Bluff, but UCA won the previous seven and 16 of the previous 18 meetings. The Bears lead the overall series 23-13, one that began in 1970-71 in the old Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference.
Both teams are coming off victories in their last games. UCA beat cross-town rival Hendrix 82-39 on Friday night at the Farris Center. The Bears had three players in double figures, led by true freshman
Tucker Anderson with 20 points. Junior
Ibbe Klintman added a career-high 17 points and fellow junior
Elias Cato had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Golden Lions have won two straight after opening the season with a 22-point loss at Missouri. UAPB won easily over Champion Christian (116-73) last Thursday and over Southwestern Christian (112-68) on Saturday. UCA will also travel to Columbia, Mo., to take on Missouri on Dec. 30.
UAPB's leading scorer is Conway native and Western Kentucky transfer Kylen Milton, who is averaging 27.3 points per game and shooting 81.8 from the field and 69.2 from three-point range. His scoring average ranks fifth in the nation. As a team, UAPB has made 40 three-pointers in three games, which ranks fourth nationally.
UCA will be on the road for its next three games against a formidable trio of teams. The Bears play at Vanderbilt on Friday night, at Southeast Missouri on Monday, Nov. 20 and at Kansas State on Wednesday, Nov. 22. UCA then returns home to host the Central Arkansas Classic on Nov. 25-26, featuring Eastern Michigan, New Orleans and North Dakota.
