JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Central Arkansas women's soccer team put up 24 shots against the Jacksonville Dolphins on Thursday night, but could only come away with a single goal, tying the Dolphins 1-1 in ASUN play.
The result moves the Bears to 7-6-4 overall, now 6-1-2 in league matches.
Sydney Brough tallied her fourth goal of the season, opening the second half scoring. The grad student put up a game-high six shots, with four being on target.
Brough nearly opened the scoring straight away, firing her first shot of the game in the first minute of action, but it was blocked before presenting much threat. The Bears unleashed a season-high 24 shots against Jacksonville, sending them goalward from the first minute until the 85
th minute.
Possession was bounced back and forth between the teams for most of the first half, with a shot here and there from both sides. It wasn't until the 19
th minute that
Trace Pavatt put the first shot on target, forcing a save from the Dolphin keeper. Brough and
Kelly Van Gundy would each add shots of their own over the next several minutes that also required saves, and the Bears were starting to take the momentum. Jacksonville tried to answer with a 32
nd shot on goal, but
Kajsa Pruner was all over it.
Megan Moudy let one loose right before half, but sent the teams to the break without a score, missing to the right of the goal.
Central Arkansas wasted no time coming out of the half, with Brough again taking early shots for the visitors. Finally, just over two minutes into the new 45, she would connect, putting the Bears on top with the team's 12
th shot of the match.
The strikes continued from the Bears, giving the Jacksonville defense all it could handle, but the Dolphins did a good job of bending without breaking. Central Arkansas took 14 shots in the second half, with eight of them on target. But the Bears just couldn't find that final touch, that next shot to slip by and increase the lead. Jacksonville bided its time, looking for an opportunity to equalize that came to fruition in the 71
st minute.
With the game level again, Jacksonville seized momentum and tried to take advantage of its newfound energy, outshooting the Bears 4-1 over the next ten minutes. The Bears, however, regained their footing and pressed forward again, nearly converting on several attempts in the final stretch of the match. With less than ten minutes to go, Central Arkansas put a further fifve shots on target, but all of them were kept out of the net, sending the teams through the final whistle tied.
Tying the Dolphins still gives the Bears a point for the ASUN table, keeping the Bears at second place. With just two games left on the schedule, Central Arkansas is tied with Florida Gulf Coast at 20 points, but holds the head-to-head tiebreaker after defeating the Eagles earlier this season.
Central Arkansas is back on the pitch on Sunday, facing off with North Florida at 12 p.m. CT.
