Softball Takes on Memphis in Midweek Matchup

CONWAY, Ark. – Hitting the road for a midweek, the Bears return to Memphis, Tenn., to take on the Tigers in a rematch from early March. After winning 1-0 in the UofM Tournament, Central Arkansas looks to take two wins from the American Athletic Conference foe this season. First pitch against Memphis is set for 5 p.m.

Central Arkansas (25-15, 10-5 ASUN) heads to Memphis (16-28, 2-12 AAC) on a six-game win streak, most recently sweeping ASUN foe Eastern Kentucky in a three-game set last weekend. Outscoring their opponents 34-11 over the win streak, the offense is humming as the Bears get into the final stretch of the schedule.

As a team, the Bears are batting .358 over the span, with four players batting .444 or higher. Morgan Nelson, a recent sub into the lineup, has batted .467 in her five appearances during the win streak, recording seven hits in 15 at bats, with three home runs and four RBI.

Also hitting well, Mary Kate Brown won her first ASUN Player of the Week award for her series against EKU, after hitting .583 in the three games against the Colonels. With six RBI and perfect defense, the redshirt sophomore was crowned with her first conference honor of the year.

Jordan Johnson also got in on the accolades this week, earning her second ASUN Pitcher of the Week after a couple of wins against the Colonels. Striking out 18 in 11.1 innings of work, Johnson added to her hold on the conference strikeout leaderboard. Now with 134, she sits nine Ks above second place with just over three weeks left in the season.

Last time the Bears and Tigers met was in March, Central Arkansas won on a sacrifice hit by Jenna Wildeman that scored Tylar Vernon. Kayla Beaver tossed a two-hit shutout to pick up her eighth win of the year, inducing 16 groundouts.

Memphis has struggled in American play, winning two conference games and currently sitting in a stretch of five losses in six games. This past weekend, the Tigers fell on Thursday in game one against Tulsa before splitting a Friday doubleheader.

The 5-3 win in the series saw the Tigers score all five runs in the first two innings while holding the Golden Hurricane scoreless until a three-run home run in the fifth suddenly put the drama back into it.

Gracie Morton leads the Tigers in most offensive categories, batting .421 with 61 hits, six doubles, two triples and four home runs. The senior recorded two hits in all three of the games against Tulsa. Outside of Morton, the Tigers have just two players hitting .300, in Camryn Wineinger and Kendall Lee.

In the circle, sophomore Hallie Siems has done the lion's share of the work, leading the team with 127.2 innings with a 4.09 ERA. She has 94 strikeouts on the season, allowing batters to hit .289.

First pitch against the Tigers is set for 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Live stats are available here.
