VALDOSTA, Ga. – One round of golf in the books at the ASUN Women's Golf Championships, and the Bears find themselves in the middle of the pack, thanks in large part to All-Conference performer
Camila Moreno's even-72 round, placing her in a tie for eighth place. Central Arkansas fired a team round of 300 to land in sixth place after 18 holes at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
Moreno played under control all round, hitting for birdie on holes five, 10 and 11, but bogeys on six, 12 and 14 kept her just out of the lead after the first day.
Elin Kumlin landed in 21
st after her first set, recovering from bogeying three of the first five to maintaining par for the rest of the way. Also tied at 21
st,
Madison Holmes also hit a couple of bad holes out of the gates, but came back to form and was one under from holes seven onward.
Pear Rittawee ended her first round at a 6-over 78, rounding out the back nine with a pair of birdies to finish on a good note. Bringing up the end of the roster,
Tania Nunez shot an 83 first frame to land in 47
th. The Bears end the first day of action in sixth place, but sit just six strokes out of third.
North Florida claims the top spot after the first day, shooting five under as a team. Defending champion Kennesaw State is three strokes behind the Ospreys in second place, while EKU and Lipscomb are tied for third.
Individually, Kennesaw State's Bella Kil hit birdies on three of her last four holes to take a one-stroke lead, sitting three under after 18 holes. Five players are tied for second place with a 2-under, all shooting a 70 through day one.
The field will play two more rounds at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Ga., one on Monday and one on Tuesday, to decide the conference champions. This is the first year in the ASUN for Central Arkansas.
