NASHVILLE, Tenn. _ Even though the University of Central Arkansas Bears have already wrapped up a first-round home game in next week's ASUN Tournament, they would like nothing more than to close out the regular season on a two-game winning streak.
They have that opportunity at 1 p.m. Saturday when they take on the Lipscomb Bisons at Allen Arena in Nashville in the final regular season game of the year. The Bears won the first meeting in a high-scoring affair (93-88) back on Jan. 9 at the Farris Center.Â
UCA earned the No. 2 seed from the ASUN West Division with Wednesday night's 81-72victory at North Alabama, which completed a season sweep of the Lions. Another sweep of the Bisons would give the Bears some nice momentum heading into Tuesday night's first-round matchup at the Farris Center against the No. 6 seed from the East Division, either Stetson or North Florida.
In the first UCA-LIpscomb game, a season-high six players scored in double figures for the Bears, led by junior
Eddy Kayouloud and freshman
Camren Hunter with 18 points each. The others were junior
Darious Hall (16), graduate
Jared Chatham (11) and sophomore
Jaxson Baker and freshman
Ibbe Klintman (10 each).Â
UCA shot 55.1 percent from the field overall and made 11 three-pointers, tying their second-best outing of the season from beyond the arc. UCA played eight players in the game and all eight had at least one three-pointer. The Bears finished with 20 assists and a season-low five turnovers.
Lipscomb 6-foot-9, 275-pound center Ahsan Asadullah did most of the damage for the Bisons with 32 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. He also shot 15 of 20 from the field. Lipscomb had four others in double figures but got just 11 points off its bench, UCA had 35 points from non-starters, including Kayouloud's 18. Asadullah leads the Bisons in points (14.9), rebounds (8.9) and assists (4.6).
Hunter, a freshman point guard from Bryant, Ark., leads the Bears in scoring at 14.5 points per game, and is averaging 16.3 in conference games. Chatham, over the past seven games, is averaging 18.9 points and 9.8 rebounds. He topped 500 career rebounds on Feb. 5 (560) and 900 points (918) last week.Â
UCA beat UNA on Wednesday without three starters, including Hall (shoulder injury), freshman
Ibbe Klintman (illness) and sophomore
Collin Cooper, who sprained an ankle just 1:14 into the game.
UCA's first-round tournament opponent will be decided Saturday as well when Stetson plays North Florida. UNF has a one-game lead over Stetson, but the Hatters won the first meeting between the teams.
