CONWAY, Ark. – Off to another SEC-hosted tournament, the Central Arkansas softball team heads to Starkville Miss., this weekend to participate in Mississippi State's Bulldog Kickoff Classic. There, the Bears will play in a pair of games Friday and a pair of games Saturday, playing Georgia Tech and Mississippi State on Friday before playing the Bulldogs and Southern Illinois on Saturday.
The Bears are coming off their first tournament of the season, as they played in LSU's Tiger Classic. In Game Three of the team's stay, Central Arkansas defeated No. 14 LSU to pick up its first win of the season. The victory also marked the first win in head coach
Jenny Parsons' head coaching tenure.
Mississippi State's tournament will feature two new opponents for the Bears, as the team has never played against Georgia Tech, whom Central Arkansas will play Friday, followed with a first-time matchup against Southern Illinois on Saturday.
Central Arkansas looks to rebound a little bit from the last weekend. After a 1-4 start, the team is buoyed by
Tremere Harris' numbers at the plate and
Kayla Beaver's start in the circle. Harris was named the ASUN Co-Player of the Week after batting .563 through five games last week, recording nine base hits in 16 at bats. The sophomore also drove in a pair of runs and was successful on all three of her attempted stolen bases.
Beaver, who appeared in three games over the course of the tournament, was the winning pitcher against LSU, picking up eight strikeouts in her 12.2 innings of work.
First pitch of the weekend will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, taking on Georgia Tech to open the weekend. The Bears will then close Friday's play with a bout against the hosting Bulldogs at approximately 5:30 p.m., then resume play with the final two games of Saturday, facing the Bulldogs for a second time at 3 p.m., followed with Southern Illinois at 5:30 p.m.
The games against Mississippi State will be broadcast on SECN+, and stats links for all games are available at UCASports.com.
