LORMAN, Miss. – A poor shooting day ended a four-game winning streak for the Central Arkansas women's basketball team on Tuesday. Falling to Alcorn State, the Sugar Bears dropped a 45-41 final score.
Randrea Wright led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 8-of-15.
Kayla Mitchell pulled down a career-best 11 rebounds, nearly doubling her previous best of six boards.
Central Arkansas got off to a nice start, being awarded an administrative technical foul before tip-off, giving
Kierra Prim a chance to knock down a free throw, which she did. Tipping off the game up 1-0, the Sugar Bears scored the first two baskets of the game to take a 5-0 lead midway through the first; Alcorn State scored for the first time on a three-pointer with 5:29 left in the opening quarter. Trading shots for the remainder of the quarter, Central Arkansas ended the first period leading 10-7.
The lead grew to five early in the second quarter, as
Kyjai Miles knocked down an open jumper on the baseline, but a 7-1 run by the Braves switched the lead for the first time in the half. Building a small lead, back-to-back threes made it a four-point gap for Alcorn with four minutes to go. Central Arkansas answered, with
Parris Atkins connecting on a late jumper to cut the deficit to two at the break.
Despite starting the second half with a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead, the Sugar Bears never seemed to be able to establish consistent offense against the Braves, trading the lead back and forth throughout the second half. Fighting for any kind of edge, Central Arkansas took its final lead of the afternoon with a Wright layup with just over three minutes to go, moving ahead 38-37. From there, the Braves ended on an 8-3 run to take the win.
Central Arkansas plays two more games on the road in this road swing, heading to Tulsa, Okla., on Sunday to take on the Golden Hurricane. Tip-off at Tulsa is set for 1 p.m.
