Sugar Bears fall to Lipscomb on the road

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Central Arkansas' impressive run came to an end on Friday night at the hands of Lipscomb in four sets. The Sugar Bears' ASUN record now sits at 6-3.

The first set showed signs of promise for the Sugar Bears. They took the reins down the stretch and even fended off a late 3-0 run from the Bisons to take the first set 25-20. Alexis Stumbough came out and set the tone for Central Arkansas, getting four kills in the inaugural set, propelling UCA to the 1-0 set advantage.

If there has ever been a roller coaster of a set, it was the second set on Friday night. In what was initially a tight game, Lipscomb nabbed a 17-10 lead in the blink of an eye. The Sugar Bears collected themselves and clawed back into the game, eventually erasing the deficit and taking a 21-20 lead. What was initially a potential disaster turned into potential opportunity. The teams passed the lead back and forth before Lipscomb finally got the upper hand and evened things up at a set apiece with a 29-27 score.

UCA didn't let one failed opportunity dampen its spirits as the team fought hard to open the third set. Neither side could really take the upper hand until it was 18-17 UCA. Then Lipscomb went on an 8-1 run and all of the sudden, the Sugar Bears had their backs against the wall in a way they hadn't throughout their lengthy winning streak. The Bisons took the third set 25-20, quickly turning the tables on the Sugar Bears and putting them on the ropes.

Central Arkansas continued to show fight in the fourth set with the score tight in the early going. Things would stay close until Lipscomb went on a 7-1 run to make it 17-11. UCA had responded to adversity in bunches while on its winning streak, but seemingly ran out of gas down the stretch. The Bisons forced in the dagger with a 6-1 run to seal a 25-16 win in the deciding set.

Stumbough led the Sugar Bears with 14 kills, with Jamiryana Hall not far behind at 12. Caylan Koons had 39 assists on the night to go along with four kills, an ace and seven digs. Alexis McDaniel led the Sugar Bears with 19 digs on the night.

Central Arkansas will look to rebound at Austin Peay on Saturday, October 22nd at 4 p.m. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and as always, you can keep up with all the action on Twitter at @ucavball.
