JACKSONVILLE, Fla. _ The North Florida Ospreys got hot from the perimeter in the second half Thursday and knocked off the University of Central Arkansas Bears 93-74 in ASUN Conference action at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys (5-16, 1-6) made 14 three-pointers on the night, including 10 of 20 in the second half when they outscored the Bears 55-34. UCA played much of the second half without its leading scorer and rebounder
Darious Hall, who injured his shoulder early in the half. Hall finished with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals in just 17 minutes.
"I think if it had been later in the game, it would have been a different story,' said Boone of Hall's injury. "But as early as it was in the second half, that was a really big letdown mentally for our team. We really dropped the ball after that. And we just couldn't recover from it.Â
"We have to mature, we have to learn to play through that. But that was a really big blow to us.'
The Bears had four players in double figures, led by freshman point guard
Camren Hunter with 17 points. Junior forward
Eddy Kayouloud added 15 points and 5 rebounds, while graduate
Jared Chatham had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Sophomore
Jaxson Baker scored 10 points off the bench.Â
The Bears finished a respectable 6 of 15 from three-point range but could not match the Ospreys' hot hand. UNF's Jarius Hicklen made 6 of 13 from beyond the arc and scored 24 points, as did Jose Placer, who was 4 of 8 on threes. The Ospreys finished with five in double figures and shot 47.1 percent overall and 36.8 percent from three-point range.  Â
The Bears (6-13 3-3) shot 38.6 percent overall and 82.4 percent from the foul line, and had just nine turnovers.
"I think there was a point in the second half after Day Day (Hall) went out that we started playing a little slower,' said Boone. "And that's just not us. We're not as good when we do that. We kind of let our pace get slow.
"And then they got hot shooting threes, and that's all it took, just giving them a little bit of hope. And once they had that, they just started rolling.'
The Bears continue their first Florida road trip on Saturday, taking on the Jacksonville Dolphins at 5 p.m. (CT) at Swisher Gymnasium.
