CONWAY, Ark. - The University of Central Arkansas Tennis program swept Abilene Christian 4-0 in the shorten match.
The Bears bested the Wildcats in the final regular-season dual, as the rain called the match shortly after the match-clinching point.Â
Doubles:
UCA came right out the gate with a certain aggressiveness as they took the first two matches early on. The freshmen pairing of
Maja Gledic and
Jaeun Lee began putting pressure on ACU as they blanked the competition in the 6-0 route.Â
Following them was one of the best tandems in the Southland Conference. Sophomore's
Chunxi Xin and
Fuka Nonoyama continued to showcase why they are one of the best as they took on the Wildcat's undefeated combo. That undefeated mark meant nothing to the duo as they won the match 6-3 and finished out the regular season officially 9-0 in SLC play.
Singles:
UCA was faced with a different task in this matchup as they had to overcome the opponent and a rain delay. The Bears won five of the six first sets before an hour-long weather delay followed. Fortunately for UCA, they were able to come out in three of the six matches with the exact aggressive nature they started with.Â
Nonoyama was the first to take advantage of the situation as she finished out with a quick second set. Nonoyama won her matchup 6-1, 6-4, and following her was No. 4 Lee. Lee claimed hers in a similar fashion as she dominated her way to a 6-1, 6-3 victory. The last player to finish out a match was Xin. Xin claimed hers with an identical score as she won 6-1, 6-3. Before anyone else could come in, the match was called as the rain kept piling on and making the courts too slick to continue.Â
Quote from head coach
Casey Wharton:
"It's been a very solid regular season, I have been very proud of how we have played week in and week out. Abilene is always good, and I enjoy playing them because they match up good with how we play. I thought doubles we came out playing very intentional, every ball we hit had a purpose. That helped us get ahead and stay ahead especially at No. 3. This team is really good and for us to get out and play the way we wanted to play early and keep playing that way helped build momentum. I was unsure going into the rain delay if we would comeback out and continue that. On some courts we did and some courts the opponents used that as a restart. I am really encouraged to be able to win CC (Xin), Fuka and Jaeun's matches before the second wave of rain came. I feel very positive about the way we played today and had a good end to the regular season."
