CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas beach volleyball team opened the Beach Bear Invitational on Friday with a dominant 5-0 victory over North Alabama. The Beach Bears improved to 12-8 on the year, while the Lions fell to 8-7 on the season.
Bria Garmon and
Shannon Stone got the Beach Bears on the board first as they defeated Samantha Shafer and Mackenzie Blackwood in the No. 5 spot, 21-19 and 21-12. In the No. 4 position,
Julia Oravec and
Kayla Cook won the first set 21-16 against Mackenzie Martin and Catie Ladner. After the UNA pair won the second set 21-15, Oravec and Cook were resilient and bounced back to win the third set 15-10.
Makenna Schmitt and
Kelsie Sager bested Jelena Girod and Catie Ladner in the No. 3 matchup 21-14 and 21-19. The win by Schmitt and Sager clinched the overall match victory for the Beach Bears.
Evelyn Griffith and
Faith Hasness put together a strong performance in their match as they knocked off Maya Dickson and Taylor Seney in the No. 2 spot.
Aly Brinkley and
Colene Hamilton added another strong showing in the No. 1 position as they defeated Paula Klemperer and Natalie Kordt 21-14 and 21-19. The win by Brinkley and Hamilton secured the sweep for UCA.
UCA returns to action on Saturday, April 3, for the final day of the Beach Bear Invitational. Central Arkansas faces North Alabama at noon before a match against cross-town foe Hendrix at 2 p.m.
