Bears Complete Fourth-Straight Conference Sweep

CONWAY, Ark. – The Central Arkansas softball team collected its fourth-straight Southland Conference series sweep on Sunday, as the Bears defeated the Nicholls Colonels 7-1 at Farris Field. Jaylee Engelkes led UCA with a 2-for-3 performance and home run.
 
In the top of the first, the Colonels managed to get two runners on, but Kayla Beaver settled down and got out of the inning unscathed with two strikeouts.
 
In the bottom of the second, Cylla Hill recorded a one-out walk and then stole second. Tremere Harris drew a walk. Hill and Harris moved up on the bases thanks to a wild pitch. Tylar Vernon battled at the plate and drew a walk. Reagan Sperling lined a single to right field. On the same play, the right fielder made a fielding error which allowed Hill, Harris, Vernon as well as Sperling to all score. The Bears took a 4-0 lead into the third.
 
In the bottom of the third, Jaylee Engelkes launched a moonshot over the right field wall that hit the UCA Softball building for a home run. The Bears held a 5-0 lead as the game went to the fourth inning.
 
Melise Goosen led off the top of the fourth inning with a solo homer to left center and cut the UCA lead to 5-1.
 
Harris drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the fifth. Megan Crownover pinch hit and drove a ball off the center field wall, which allowed Harris to score. The Bears took a 6-1 lead into the sixth inning.
 
Gabbi Scott drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth and then stole second. Erin Acors flew out to right field and moved Scott to third. Engelkes doubled to right center and drove in Scott from third. UCA went on to win the game 7-1.
 
Beaver recorded the win and moved to 13-5 on the season in the circle. She went four innings with four strikeouts and one earned run on five hits. Jordan Johnson picked up her second save of the season with three innings in relief with three strikeouts.
 
Engelkes led the Bears at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs. Wildeman also recorded a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
 
Taryn Westbrook got the loss and fell to 2-6 on the season in 1.2 innings of work with four runs, two earned. Jordan Moon added three innings in relief with two earned runs and a one strikeout. Emily Danehower added 1.1 innings in the circle with one earned run and two strikeouts. Caitlin Garcia led Nicholls at the plate with a 2-for-3 day.
 
The Bears return to the road for a three-game series against Houston Baptist Friday, April 16. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
