CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas: The University of Central Arkansas volleyball program is ready for a rematch as they are set to take on Southeastern Louisiana in the second round of the SLC.
The Sugar Bears only had one day to prepare as it is survive and advance this time of year. That trend will continue to happen as UCA takes on the Lady Lions today at 4 p.m.
This matchup will be a prime one to watch as these two faced off less than a week ago. In that matchup, the Sugar Bears stopped SLU's eight-match winning steak and knocked them down to the three-seed in the 3-1 victory. This time around, the implications are through the roof as the winner moves on and the loser goes home.
While the Lady Lions are rested and ready to go, UCA is riding the high of the momentum they gained against ACU. The Sugar Bears dominated and produced an offensive prowess that has not been seen this season. For that to continue, UCA needs a huge helping hand from its senior leaders. They utilized that help against the Wildcats and will need it again to continue to shock the conference. Senior's Amanda Beaton, Amari Mitchell, Emily Doss and Bailey Waddington will all be at the forefront of this success as they all played their roles perfectly in the first round.
Mitchell's role specifically can not be understated for this matchup. She will be the starting wall that will stand against freshman standout Kailin Newsome from SLU. The freshman landed herself on the first-team all-conference list while also claiming freshman of the year. She did this due to her relentless pressure on the net as she averaged 4.05 kills per set, which was good enough for second in the conference. For that reason, Mitchell, junior Ravin Rhodes and freshman Charlie Tidwell will be essential as they prepare for their battle at the net.
This second-round matchup will take place at 4 p.m. today in the Corpus Christi gym.
