MOYER, BEARS DOWN TEXANS 6-1 IN HOME OPENER

CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas Bears got six strong innings from senior right hander Mark Moyer and some timely hits from various spots in the lineup Friday in a 6-1 victory over the Tarleton State Texans in UCA's home opener at Bear Stadium.

Moyer struck out four and allowed just one run. Redshirt freshman Tyler Cleveland pitched the final three innings for his second save, striking out four and allowing just one hit.

Senior Coby Potvin finished 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored as UCA scored single runs in the first and second innings, then added four in the third to put it out of reach. The Bears got their six runs off just seven hits and two TSU errors. All six runs came against TSU starter Alex Pinedo, who struck out five and walked five.

In the first, Potvin had a bunt single and Beau Orlando walked. Connor Flagg had an RBI single to left center, scoring Potvin. UCA made it 2-0 in the second on a RBI single to right by Nathaniel Sagdahl that scored Kolby Johnson.

The Bears exploded for four runs on three hits and an error in the third. Sagdahl reached on a throwing error to score Benny Ayala. A Connor Emmet ground out brought in Christian Brasher and Potvin scored two with a single to left field.

TSU relievers Justin Waltmon and Zane Badmaev combined to allow just one hit over the final five innings. Tyler Fowler led the Texans at the plate, going 2 for 4 from his leadoff spot.

The Texans will face Missouri State at noon Saturday, followed by Game 2 vs. the Bears at 4 p.m. The series finishes up Sunday with UCA taking on Missouri State at 1 p.m.
