CONWAY, Ark. - Central Arkansas enters into another chance to increase their standing in the ASUN as they battle three opponents in the second ASUN Crossover weekend.
The Sugar Bears will flip the switch as they takeoff towards Jacksonville, Fla. to take on some Eastern Division foes with Liberty on Friday, Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, and Jacksonville on Sunday, with all three matchups happening at 11 a.m.
As it sits right now, UCA is in for a pairing of close matchups as well as one that the Sugar Bears will hope to pull the upset on. Starting it off will be a close one as Liberty is 7-8 overall with a 3-5 ASUN record. Following that will be the toughest of the three as they will take on the best in the ASUN. That matchup will consist of facing the dominant FGCU Eagles. This squad is currently 16-4 overall with a perfect 8-0 record in the ASUN. The final matchup of the weekend will be a battle of the bottom of the totem as Jacksonville is currently last in the East and UCA is second to last in the West. The Dolphins are currently 4-10 overall, with an ASUN record of 1-7 on the year.
The Sugar Bears will need to pull out all the stops with a trio of big matches to host a winning weekend. If UCA wants hope to push past these three opponents, they will need to draw inspiration from their defensive success. Currently, the Sugar Bears rank second in the ASUN as a team with a 2.42 blocks per set average. The most significant contributors to this fact include the normal suspects in graduate student
Amari Mitchell and sophomore
Macy Blackburn. Blackburn, in particular, is having a career year as in her last three matches, she has posted 18 total blocks. A few more players that have done their fair share are senior
Lexi Miller and freshman
Mackenzie Vernon. These two are key athletes to watch because they showcase potential on both the offensive and defensive sides. Miller is first in kills with 150 while also ranking fourth in blocks with 29. Vernon ranks third in kills with 96 and second in blocks with 40.
All four of these athletes will be crucial parts of the success plan as they face an array of new opponents. The Sugar Bears open up to the challenge starting tomorrow morning as they begin with Liberty.
